“We make a living by what we get; we make a life by what we give”
-Winston
Churchill
The ideal standard of life has not been attained by every man in the world, reason for the sharp condition of inequity. This reality is further exacerbated by the greedy group of mankind who, in the desire for more, exploit those who are less fortunate.
Life as it should be is not the way it is. Happiness,
freedom, prosperity, and peace of mind are the characteristics of the ideal
world – the ideal standard of life. But these things are missing in the life of
the majority, therefore the world cannot be said to be in the ideal. To the end
of achieving the ideal life, people struggle, fight, compete, and even venture into
and commit shades of unthinkable deeds. Money is seen as the only thing that
builds up the ideal life, because it gives power to acquire all man ever would
want. Life, thus, as become a race of getting, getting and more getting. The
sorrow of the capital man is rooted in this. He merely makes a living, merely
survives by having so much to eat, drink, and wear. He is content with the
space he builds for himself in the distortion called life. Only those who
transcend this distortion seek to make a life.
To make a life is not to amass wealth and all material
substances to oneself, but to reach out and impact the life of someone less
fortunate, to show more little love, to give of oneself. We expend ourselves in
our desires and struggles to increase in material acquisition. But our energy is
replenished the moment we begin and continue to make another life count.
Understanding life is crucial to living selflessly in the
world today. You know that all the race for wealth, fame and for the good life,
in the end, seem to count for nothing. The experience of life on Earth is what
you carry along at the point of passage into the beyond. Not one dime of
currency or one tiny substance of materiality would go with you. The impact you
leave before your demise is the most important mark of your passage through
life on Earth.
It is more than an obligation to serve the world. It is one
of the purposes for existence here. This service is rendered in several ways.
You must not necessarily be the world’s richest figure. The talent, skill and
opportunities you are granted are the channels you have to release love and
care to the world.
A similar admonition as the quote above, given by John
Wesley, states that “do all the good you can, by all the means you can, in all
the ways you can, in all the places you can, at all the times you can, to all
the people you can, as long as ever you can”. If you cannot make 10 or 5 people
in your life time, then just make 1. A great joy lies in this act.
