Cleaniliness is next to godliness. - Old Adage
This oft-repeated
adage reiterates the truth that the cultivation of the virtue of cleanliness is
the ultimate step to the status of godliness. Cleanliness being the condition
of being ‘clean’, not only in outward appearance or the tending of the
environment, but of being clean on the inside.
The virtue of
cleanliness is a coin with two sides: the inward and the outward. The outward
part of cleanliness is what most of the people hold on to as the conception,
defining cleanliness as the condition of personal and environmental aesthetic,
that is, of maintaining constant cleanliness in body by taking regular
ablutions, putting on clean clothes, and living and working in clean
environments. It is very understandable why people use the outwards form as the
definition, because it is the outward which is most visible. And furthermore we
live on a planet with so much beauty that dazzles the eyes. If men cultivate
the environment so as to maintain this beauty the virtue of cleanliness is
noted to be at play, even if such act were merely to disguise an inherent
irreverence for cleanliness.
If cleanliness is
not cultivated inside of man, this noble virtue cannot be demonstrated on the
outside. Cleanliness is an internal quality; it belongs to noble humans. It propels
those who uphold it to keep clean their space and everything they do. Cultivating
cleanliness is a lifestyle next to that of godliness – it is next to holiness. Cleanliness
is next to holiness. Cleanliness is next to the sacred. Uncleanliness, to use this word, is the condition of the profane. Uncleanliness
is the building ground for all manner of obscenities. Uncleanliness is the
matrix in which unclean spirits, which afflict men, breed. Unclean beings
thrive in unclean environment. The unclean and the godly are two worlds apart.
Every human must
strive for the status of the godly. Every human, who is very conscious of his
or her origin in a Creator Who is Beauty, must as a fact of life strive to be
clean and to always live clean. He or she must keep thoughts, words and deed,
clean, putting away all lies, deceit and obscene talk. He or she must cultivate
friendships that uphold this virtue. He or she must read materials which do not
lodge impurities in the mind. He or she must keep his is her space clean – at home,
school, workplace, or anywhere. All things must be done with a sense of beauty.
You must not lose sight of the fact that all men are created virtuous, and must
as a matter of fact live godly in manners, and this living in the light of godliness
do not presuppose fanatic religiosity, rather a spirituality which transcends
the natural for the highest ideal.
The position of
godliness is the level where men contact the heavenlies and draw power and
inspiration to keep themselves and the world in progress! Unclean men are
bereft of true imagination and inspiration. Their minds are not tended enough
to receive and lodge ‘the pure
though-gifts of the Highest’ – too dark to accommodate the light of
creativity.
The ultimate purpose
of men is to achieve a high status of godliness. Cultivating habitual modes of
cleanliness in thought, word, deed, and life is the first step!
Cleanliness is next
to godliness, the adage reiterates!
